Scripts

Churrrrple! Chuurrple! Chuuurple!

The scripts for the first 12 Purple Puzzle Tree stories are available on The Purple Puzzle Tree website for people to use in a variety of ways. Some may wish to peruse the creative language of the text.  Some may wish to compare the stories with the more formal version in the Bible.  Some may wish to try and outdo The Old Storyteller and tell the story their own way!

The scripts are especially good for teachers or grandparents who wish to turn the stories into dramas where the children play roles, makes the sounds, sing the songs and make worship of time of real enjoyment.

Above all, learn to ChUURPLE!  Turn the sounds into great noises!  Turn the songs into musicals!  Turn the stories into mysteries!

I have often been asked why I call this puzzle PURPLE!  My answer is simple:  It rhymes with Churple!  Now CHUUURRRPLE has become a sacred sound, a rich memory of childhood, a connection with the mystery of God’s word.

The first six stories have been reprinted in book form and are available in Australia from Norman Habel:  nhabel@bigpond.com

WHEN GOD WAS ALL ALONE

A long long time ago
when God was all alone,
God had no one to talk with
and no one to play with.
God had no one to live with
and no one to stay with.
So that wasn’t any fun, now was it?          No!
A long long time ago
when God was all alone.
the world was like a fishbowl
full of purple water,
and not one little fish!
So that wasn’t any fun, now was it?        No!!!

A long long time ago
when God was all alone,
there wasn’t any green
and there wasn’t any white.
There wasn’t any yellow
and there wasn’t any light,
but everything was purple,
a very purple purple
from the very purple water.
So that wasn’t any fun, now was it?        No!

Then the water started churning,
churning round and round
and it made a funny sound, like
Churple!     Churple! Chuuuuurple!
So that wasn’t very good. Now was it?     No!

So God looked in the water
to see what could be seen.
But God couldn’t see a thing
except a very purple purple
from the very purple waters
that made a funny sound like
Churple! Churple!  Chuuuuuurple!

So God said:   LIGHT
Let’s have some light!
And in a flash God saw the light
with many many colours,
like green and blue and red and pink
and yellow, brown and white.
And that was very good, now wasn’t it?    Yes!
But the water kept on churning,
churning round and round
and up and down and in and out
and everywhere there was.
For there weren’t any mountains
and wasn’t any land
to stop the purple water
from going round and round
and making funny sounds like
Churple! Churple!
Chuuuuuurple!
So that wasn’t very good,
now was it?     No!

Then God said: Earth!
Let Earth be born.
Let the Earth beneath the waters
come out for all to see,
like a baby being born.
And in a flash there was a hump,
a very lumpy hump.
The hump was made of sand
and soil and rocks
and grass and trees.
And so God said:
I think I’ll call this baby Earth!

Baby Earth was brown and green
and she hardly makes a sound.
But sometimes,
if you put your ear down to the ground
and listen late at night, Earth says:
EEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Then God said,  Sky!
Let’s have some sky!
And in a flash there was a ceiling
very very high over all the land.
The ceiling stopped the water,
that water up above us,
from falling down and going round
and making funny sounds like,
Churple! Churple! Chuuuuuurple!
So that was very good,
now wasn’t it?        Yes!

Then once again God said Sky!
I’ll call the ceiling ‘Sky’
for it is very high.
And no one really knows
just how high it goes! Do you?

Then in the sky God hung some stars
And once in a while an old one falls.
Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Then from that ceiling way up there
God swung two yellow lights,
the sun by day
and the moon by night.
But neither of them falls
when God swings them out of sight.

Then God said, Life!
Let’s have some life
to fill the Earth and sky.
Then in a flash there was a
splaaaaaashshsh
as purple fish went swimming.

And after this there was a
swiiiiiiiiiiishshsh
as birds and gnats went zooming.
Then after a while God had to smile
as God watched the animals
learning how to walk.
Clip Clop!  Flip Flop!

So God made everything there was.
God made the ants and the snails,
and the clumsy kangaroos
who have very funny tails,
the purple fish and the old black crow
and the camel with a hump,
and the happy hippopotamus
who has very muddy feet
that make a funny sound like
Phump Shlurphump
Shlurphumpp!
So that was very good,
now wasn’t it?    Yes!

So God made everything there was
and God had so much fun.
For God loved the world and all God made and said:
That’s very good!
And that was very very good.
Now, wasn’t it?        Yes!
